Weddings at St Mark’s

I, N, take you, N,
to be my wife/husband,
to have and to hold, from this day forward;
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
till death us do part;
according to God’s holy law.
In the presence of God I make this vow.

Taken from The Marriage Service (Common Worship)

We all love weddings, and at Saint Mark’s is no exception.

A wedding is one of life’s landmark occasions, and there is no better place than church to make your commitment to one another, and have your love blessed by God.

Only in church can you make vows this big surrounded by your family and friends in a delightful airy church filled with light that has been a focus for prayer and worship over many years

You will be amazed at how lovely the church can look for your wedding day. We have seating for up to 120 guests and we have disabled facilities and access to the church.

Your wedding can be augmented by the services of our professional organist who can help you choose music to make your day extra special, and we have a robed choir who can come and help with the singing.

We can also advise you about flowers and orders of service. And you could even hold your reception here. Saint Mark’s is a multi-purpose building that can easily be transformed into a reception venue while you are having your photo’s taken.

Speak to the Vicar early in your planning so we can make it a day to remember.

Marriage is church after divorce.

The Church recognises that sadly some marriages do fail, and we do our best to help couples who come to us for marriage after divorce. The Church of England allows the re-marriage of people in church “under exceptional circumstances” and you should speak to the Vicar as early as possible. In all cases a decree absolute must be available for inspection. The Vicar will want to spend time with you exploring your desire to re-marry in church and you must be prepared to have open and frank conversations with the minister. It cannot be stressed strongly enough that in no way is this a judgmental process, and couples will be dealt with gently and with sensitivity - so don’t be afraid to ask!

The Legal Bit

Who can get married at Saint Mark’s?

Anyone who lives in the ecclesiastical parish of Shelfield and High Heath or who is on the Electoral Roll of this Church.

Under the Marriage Measure 2008 you may also marry here if you have a “Qualifying Connection” e.g. you may be a former resident; you may have been baptized here; your parents may have married here.

If you do not meet any of the criteria above, don’t panic! There are other legal options for marriage in this place, and you should talk to the Vicar if you are at all unsure of your legal right to marry here.
